4. Guerrilla naval tactics were used by Shivaji

Maharaj to take on the British, Portuguese, and

other European powers' formidable naval forces. He

invented the use of tiny, manoeuvrable ships called

"Galivats" for hit-and-run assaults, boarding

adversary ships, and causing havoc with their operations.

When used against the larger and slower European

warships, these strategies were very successful.
